On Sunday night, the nation saw Ronnie and Georgia’s property fail to sell under the hammer in The Block 2017 finale. The question floating around is, was the reserve price just too high for their property? Or, was the Scott Cam’s call to pass in the property the wrong decision?
Sadly (as tears wept down Georgia’s face), the property was passed in at $20,000 shy of the reserve price.
Without hesitation, host Scott Cam had advised Ronnie and Georgia to pass the property in after the bidding had stalled at $2.6 million. He believed that they could fetch a higher selling price through private negotiation.
Auctioneer Bill Stavrakis from Biggin & Scott was instructed by Ronnie and Georgia not to allow buyers the chance to bid when he returned to the crowd. Witnessing experts, crowd members and contestants were left shocked.
Stavrakis clearly didn’t agree with Scott Cam’s decision to pass the property in. But he couldn’t really do anything about it.
Ronnie and Georgia trusted Scott Cam’s decision to pass the property in. But hey, who’s the real expert here? Scotty or Stavrakis?
Stavrakis is described on his agency profile as having a ‘strict dedication to process.’ You could see disappointment written all over his face.
After two offers of 2,675,000 and $2,725,000 were rejected by the couple, the property was quickly snapped up by buyers’ advocate Nicole Jacobs for $2.78 million on behalf of a family. Ronnie and Georgia ended up walking home in third place with $161,000.
But the question remains, had seasoned auctioneer Stavrakis fired up the auction again, would Ronnie and Georgia have taken home more money? We’ll never know.
It’s really about trust. And after many weeks of working alongside Scott Cam, it’s no surprise they stuck with his advice. But Stavrakis is out there every Saturday selling local houses left, right and centre. Tricky decision.
