The word Karrum Karrum was recorded as being used by the original inhabitants of nearby Olivers Hill, as noted by surveyors in 1836. The first survey of (now) Carrum Downs was conducted in 1866 and noted a single dwelling; fast forward 150 years and this number is over 8000 dwellings and a little over 20,000 residents.
